AVSPNI-NEW-2014-for-the-web

Organising Body: AVSPNI

Topic: Feline pyoderma
Speaker: Anita Patel
Sponsor: Bayer

Anita is one of only a handful of veterinary dermatologists recognised as specialists by the Royal College. In 2002, after a residency at the Royal Veterinary College’s Queen Mother Hospital, she qualified as a Diplomat in Veterinary Dermatology and started her specialist career and dermatology referral practice.  Previously, Anita had been a partner in general practice for 15 years, during which she gained her practising certificate in small animal dermatology in 1993. She studied Veterinary Medicine at Nairobi University and subsequently at Glasgow, becoming a member of the Royal College in 1982.  Often the problems that are referred to her are multi-factorial and need both immediate treatment and long-term management. Her approach to treatment is pragmatic, based on her many years experience in small animal practice, and she understands the compliance problems many clients have, especially when the treatment is expensive and/or carried out at home. Once the diagnosis has been made, therefore, she prescribes a treatment regime and a long-term management program that can be carried out by the referring veterinary practice. Her aim, with these intractable conditions, is always to improve the patient’s (and owners’) quality of life by reducing, or ideally eliminating, the symptoms and, by good management, prevent their re-occurrence.
