Veterinary Northern Ireland (VetNI)

Issued by DARD

Help prevent the introduction or spread of FMD to NI

DO  Clean and disinfect buildings, vehicles and   equipment after use

DO  Wear clean protective clothing and footwear on your farm

DO  Wash your hands after handling stock

DO  Provide an approved disinfectant and cleaning equipment at the    farm entrance for the use of essential visitors

DO  Inspect animals regularly for signs of disease

DO  Isolate newly purchased animals

DO  Keep different species of livestock separate where possible

DO  Keep non essential visitors off the farm and all visitors away from livestock

DON’T  Wear work clothes to sales or shows.

DON’T  Visit other farms unless absolutely necessary.

DON’T  Use shared or hired equipment if you can avoid it

DON’T  Move animals from one part of the farm to another if possible, particularly between out farms and conacre

DON’T  Feed kitchen waste or swill to any animals on your farm

REMEMBER!

When handling your animals, be aware that sheep do not always show obvious signs of FMD and you could inadvertently infect other animals.

Keep everything clean – materials like mud, slurry, manure, bedding on clothes, boots equipment or vehicles can carry the virus from farm to farm or between different groups of livestock on the farm.
